Final Reflection
Genius Hour as a Teaching Strategy
After completing this project, I really can see the merit in using this as a teaching strategy in a high school setting. Especially as a potential high school teacher! Many high school students are in a phase of life where they are beginning to look inside and discover who they are and who they will become as they continue to grow. They are constantly bombarded with questions about who they want to be, and what are they going to do once they graduate...university? college? enter the work force? come back and do a victory lap?
Question after question...but who really knows who or what they are going to be when they graduate high school? I know I didn't....heck I will be graduating teachers college a whole decade after graduating from my undergrad. What a great way to try and figure out some answers to those questions by doing a Genius Hour type project to look into potential career options before spending the money at a post secondary institution only to discover that it is not the career for them.
It also shows a lot of possibilities as a really good project for a phys ed class. Looking into different passions that they students believe they have or wish they had. It could be a really good assignment to link to the mental health component of the curriculum. It can help the students to discover a positive outlet to deal with all the social anxieties and pressures that come along with being a high school student.
Overall I think that this is a really good project and that there is so much potential to use a model like this one in several different subject fields. I can speak from personal experience now as to how well the Genius Hour can work. I will admit that I was hesitant at first, but following through with the weekly tasks and items that I proposed really did help me to come to a realization as I worked through. It has helped me and given me answers and insights, and knowing what I know now I can definitely see the merit in using a project like this in a high school classroom setting.

Hi Laura!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading through your Genius Hour blog. It is clear that the topic you chose isn't just some random topic you wanted to try out that you've never had the time for, it is something that you've been passionate about for a long time and something that you would have done regardless of this project or not! Your reflection posts were very well done, I love the addition of all of the pictures; it really puts everything into perspective. It is very clear from the doctors appointments, food sensitivity tests and hormone balance checks that you take this passion of yours extremely seriously. I'm sure that you would have recorded everything regardless of this project, but I feel like having to do this genius hour project gave you another outlet to record your progress and reflect on how you have been feeling throughout the past couple of weeks. I honestly have nothing to critique, great job! And good luck with this adventure!
